Given the recent deterioration in purchasing power and ongoing uncertainty surrounding the war, Ukrainians are likely to remain highly budget-conscious over the forecast period. This should support strong growth opportunities for so-called economy supermarkets.
Supermarkets operators will continue to face a growing challenge from variety stores over the forecast period. These retailers – which include chains such as Avrora, OnePrice and Kopiyochka – have recently enjoyed a boom in popularity, with their proposition of diverse assortments of everyday grocery and non-grocery items at lower prices proving increasingly attractive as Ukrainians have become more cautious in their spending decisions and inclined to place a higher value on convenience.
With first the pandemic and then the Russian invasion having made Ukrainians much more willing to shop for groceries online, supermarkets operators will continue working to enhance their e-commerce capabilities over the forecast period. In particular, more players are likely to establish dark stores to facilitate super-fast delivery in larger cities.

Supermarkets are chained or independent retail outlets with a selling space of between 400 and 2,500 square metres and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Supermarkets may also sell a selection of non-groceries, but the product mix is skewed towards grocery items. Example brands include Casino, Kroger, and Tesco. Exception: In some markets, primarily the US, Australia and Hong Kong, there are grocery retailer brands that operate outlets with a selling space of over 2,500 square metres, but offer only a very limited range of non-grocery merchandise or none at all. These brands are included in Supermarkets.
