The snacks market is set to be hampered by high inflation in 2023, leading to muted growth of non-essential categories, such as boxed assortments. While the market is recovering from the economic shock of COVID-19, with sales maintaining positive growth territory in a continuation from the previous year, demand for packaged snacks is low in Ethiopia, even by sub-Saharan African standards.
High inflation significantly increased unit prices in 2023 which muted growth of non-essential categories. It also dampened the sales performance of boxed assortments, which saw a strong decline in volume sales.
Urban children and adults are the main consumers of snacks in Ethiopia as they are more exposed to advertisements and a greater variety of products. Meanwhile, traditional snacks such as kollo (roasted cereal and pulses), nifro (boiled cereal and pulses), besso (roasted and powdered barley) remain popular among older and more affluent consumers.
Since 2021, the Ethiopian government has implemented various policies such as monetary, fiscal, and structural measures to limit the rate of inflation. Some of these measures include the exemption of import tariffs and taxes, subsidies on imports, market price control, and the implementation of other fiscal and monetary policy instruments.
Informal retailing is prevalent across Ethiopia. Among formal retailers, traditional retailers are the preferred choice for most consumers, with open markets being especially popular.
The forecast period is expected to see steady growth in sales of snacks due mainly to strong population growth, urbanisation and the expansion of the country’s middle class. The younger generations of Ethiopians are likely to be more educated, more affluent and open to innovative snacks products compared to previous generations.
