With consumer spending still under huge pressure, Lebanon’s snacks brands faced muted demand in 2023, although volume sales did increase in all categories of snacks over the course of the year. Local players remain dominant in most categories, although they are increasingly focused on their export operations due to low local spending power.
The extremely challenging socioeconomic situation in Lebanon continued to deteriorate during 2023 as the significant devaluation of the local currency further undermined the purchasing power of the local population. However, demand picked up somewhat during the second half of the year, largely as a result of the availability of affordable locally manufactured products under strong Lebanese brands, while the influx of free-spending foreign visitors to the country, mainly Lebanese expatriates returning to their home country, also supported sales growth by augmenting the consumer base for snacks to a large extent.
After several years of socioeconomic turmoil, the population of Lebanon has split into three different categories of consumers. The first of these is the low-income majority that almost always prefer to purchase their snacks in larger packs and/or under price promotions as they prioritise value for money.
2023 saw some relief for Lebanon’s beleaguered snacks brands as an acceleration was registered in volume growth. This is a reflection of the essential status of snacks for many consumers, while the resilience of snacks sales can also be attributed to the recovery seen in the hospitality sector and the boom in inbound tourism that was registered over the course of 2022 and 2023 as substantial numbers of Lebanese expatriates took the opportunity to return to their home country for a visit.
While Lebanon’s deeply-rooted infrastructure issues go back decades, the situation has been exacerbated significantly by the ongoing economic crisis. What were previously frequent short power cuts have now evolved into total blackouts that can last for days, weeks and even months at a time.
At the end of the review period, there was still no meaningful end in sight to Lebanon’s deep and protracted economic crisis. Nonetheless, the incremental improvements seen in the socioeconomic situation during 2023 and the slight recovery registered in sales of snacks over the course of the year bode well for the category during the forecast period.
